This document transcribes a hearing held before the CSCE on 28 June 1999, and is intended to provide information on developments with regard to the sex trade in countries belonging to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The document begins with opening remarks from United States House Representative Christopher H. Smith, who points to the escalating sex trade problem in Europe and the Unites States, and condemns the lack of government initiatives to deal with this problem. The document then provides testimonies of representatives from the President's Interagency Council on Women, the Global Survival Network, the Centre for the Study of Transnational Crime and Corruption, the Protection Project, and the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children. The witnesses discuss the problems of the sex trade in the OSCE region, describe the work and findings of the entities they represent, and make recommendations. Four of the five representatives also have written submissions, which are attached in appendices to the document.
