•  Each brothel is approximately 200 sq feet.

• The ground floor brothels are commonly called 'PINJARA' (cages).    These are interspersed with a variety of shops like hair dressing    salons; eateries; paan, cigarette and liquor shops.

• Each cubicle measures around 20 sq ft, which just about houses a    bed.

• Anywhere between 4 - 15 girls or women take turns with customers in   such cubicles; this on a series of 5 - 6 beds, separated only by a thin   plywood sheet, or sometimes just a cloth sheet.

• Children often sleep under the bed, or are left unattended while their mothers are entertaining clients.
Started in 1998, AAWC (Apne Aap Women’s Collective) is an NGO that works with one of the most underprivileged and isolated sections of Mumbai’s society - women in brothel-based prostitution                                   and their children.

AAWC is not about changing the world; it’s about making a difference in the lives of these marginalized women and children, who are otherwise abandoned, destitute and exploited, with few resources to      keep their body and soul together.
