Most women come here from the borders of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, in addition to neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal.
Historically the majority of girls were 'supplied' through temple-based trafficking rampant in the south Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
This was the 'traditional route' through the 'Devadasi' and 'Venkatsani' systems. But now, tradition is being overshadowed by desperation as Bangladeshi women have started flooding the 'market,' due to extreme poverty back home.
There remains a large number of Nepali girls who are kept in a few better maintained, exclusive brothels. These women earn more because they are fair-skinned and youthful.

Started in 1998, AAWC (Apne Aap Women’s Collective) is an NGO that works with one of the most underprivileged and isolated sections of Mumbai’s society - women in brothel-based prostitution and their children.
AAWC is not about changing the world; it’s about making a difference in the lives of these marginalized women and children, who are otherwise abandoned, destitute and exploited, with few resources to keep their body and soul together.
