Although our primary work is at the grassroots level helping marginalized women and children of the red light area, we recognize that to make a real difference, there is a need to work with likeminded partners and address advocacy within our political and social systems.

AAWC works closely with other likeminded NGOs, for lobbying to create awareness about the pros and cons of the latest amendments in ITPA (Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act). In addition, we are also lobbying with the Lawyers Collective to raise awareness about the special provisions for HIV/AIDs patients in the law.

We work to create greater awareness about women’s rights, specifically those pertaining to their health issues, through street plays, rallies, puppet shows, group discussions and recreational programmes in the red light area.

AAWC has conducted over 100 workshops across schools, colleges, special interest organizations, business forums, and international schools in Mumbai. The aim is to highlight the plight of women and families who are trafficked into prostitution and to help ordinary citizens understand the work done to advocate their rights.

Started in 1998, AAWC (Apne Aap Women’s Collective) is an NGO that works with one of the most underprivileged and isolated sections of Mumbai’s society - women in brothel-based prostitution                                   and their children.

AAWC is not about changing the world; it’s about making a difference in the lives of these marginalized women and children, who are otherwise abandoned, destitute and exploited, with few resources to      keep their body and soul together.
