•  The Kamathipura area has problems with electricity and water supply.

• Crumbling passageways and open gutters are an ideal breeding     ground for contagious diseases.

• A number of unlicensed medical practitioners advertise a “special    treatments” for Sexually Transmitted Diseases/ Infections (STDs/ STIs).    They claim magical remedies for impotency problems as well.

• Cinema houses and video parlours within the area openly play X-rated films, day and night.

• The inner lanes have several shops running various illegal activities like gambling dens and narcotics joints.

• Many small industries operate on the periphery of the brothels. Most of these don’t follow legal regulations.
Started in 1998, AAWC (Apne Aap Women’s Collective) is an NGO that works with one of the most underprivileged and isolated sections of Mumbai’s society - women in brothel-based prostitution                                   and their children.

AAWC is not about changing the world; it’s about making a difference in the lives of these marginalized women and children, who are otherwise abandoned, destitute and exploited, with few resources to      keep their body and soul together.
